Graduating from high school is an exciting time – prom, parties, and the feeling that freedom is right around the corner. Some people have a million ideas about what they want to do next, and others have no clue. Some of us know exactly what we want to do, we have a passion for helping others and we are driven to succeed – we want to become doctors. At the young age of 18, medical school seems years away, but it doesn’t have to be! The many schools in Ireland welcome young students with open arms, giving us the opportunity of a lifetime.
The idea of moving to another country at such a young age is as exciting as it is terrifying. Luckily, the experience is amazing. The Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, RCSI, is located smack-dab in the middle of Dublin, a dynamic and energetic city with great food, great people, and lots to see. At 200 years old, the College itself has a vast amount of history within its walls, and its immense contribution to the field of Medicine is incredible. Dublin is a great city, a mixture of old, classic Ireland with an urban, modern-day feel where everyone is friendly. One often gets to experience all four seasons in a day, and contrary to popular belief, it does not rain all the time!
RCSI’s medical program is highly esteemed worldwide. From great lecturers to hands-on time throughout all 6 years, the learning curve is steep but enjoyable all the same. The amount and quality of clinical experience and teaching is exceptional. I came to RCSI straight out of high school, worried that my limited academic experience would set me back, but the course is designed to ease you in; I am still amazed at how much more I’ve learned at the end of each year!
To say that the community within the school is diverse would be an understatement. We are so lucky to have people from all over the world who bring their culture and share it with us. There are countless societies, clubs, and teams all putting on a variety of events to keep the students entertained. RCSI allows its students to excel in extra-curricular activities, as well as in the academic world.
It is a great feeling being surrounded by peers who are motivated, intelligent, and focused on a common goal. I feel privileged to be at an institution that looks out for my well-being and works with me to help me achieve the success I desire.
