The annual Summer Student Research Awards – now in its seventh year – has reached new heights this year, with more than 70 student participants – all of whom will compete for the coveted SSRA gold medal in research. The first stage takes place on Tuesday 24th Sept, where students pitch their research to a panel of adjudicators. Eight students are selected to compete at the SSRA final, which takes place on Thursday 3rd October.
The summer student research program encourages, supports and rewards excellence in student research. The initiative enables students of Undergraduate Entry Medicine (UEM), Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM), Radiography and Biomedical Health and Life Sciences (BHLS) to undertake structured, voluntary research during the summer months, under the guidance and supervision of an academic or clinician. The program is one of the highlights of the School calendar, and brings to life the School’s commitment to foster in our students a passion for enquiry, discovery and investigative research.
Students undertake eight-week supervised laboratory or clinical-based projects in Ireland or overseas at one of our partner institutions. Students may also select projects with an approved charity or patient-advocate partner. Participation provides students with invaluable experience in the area of investigative medical science, and is consistent with the School’s ambition to produce not just exceptional healthcare practitioners, but also life-long learners and world-class medical researchers.
Dr. Amanda McCann, Senior Lecturer and Chair of the SSRA committee, said “I am hugely proud to be associated once again with the summer student research programme. It is a unique feature of student life here at UCD School of Medicine, and participation in the program now represents an important educational milestone in the training of young healthcare professionals. To the many students who worked so hard over the summer; we salute you. While your efforts will be recognised in the context of the competition, we also hope that your participation will instill in you the importance of research and investigative science as an integeral feature of a successful career in healthcare.”
